A bone marrow transplant is a procedure that infuses healthy blood-forming stem cells into your body to replace bone marrow that's not producing enough healthy blood cells. A bone marrow transplant is also called a stem cell transplant. Bone marrow is the soft, fatty tissue inside your breastbone and pelvic bones. Your bone marrow produces blood cells. Stem cells in your bone marrow give rise to all of your different blood cells. After the cells are in your bloodstream, they make their way into your marrow where they’ll grow into red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. When they’re mature, they leave the marrow and enter the bloodstream.
